Packing for storage – your crib sheet

April 10, 2017

Let’s face it.  Post exams your brain is going to be fried.  So, we have taken the time (it’s OK, you’re welcome) to put together this super simple do and don’t list for your holiday storage packing.

DO

  • Plan first – read our last blog on this!
  • Write the contents of each box on it or on a list so you know where to find everything after the holidays.
  • Make sure each item you are storing is clearly marked with your full name.
  • Seal each box, top and bottom, with plenty of packaging tape to ensure it stays closed.
  • Label suitcases with a proper luggage tag.  Packaging tape, with your name written on, stuck to the side is likely to fall off.
  • Make sure each box/bag can be closed easily.  If you struggle to close it then it might burst open in transit and your items may be damaged.
  • Pack books flat to protect spines – oh, and check out rule 1 on the Don’t list!
  • Pack room by room, leaving the kitchen till last. The kettle is the last thing you want to put away!
  • Protect fragile items – newspaper is usually cheaper than bubblewrap!
  • Label everything, even bikes. A luggage tag around the handlebars works well.  Make sure you email us with the padlock code if it has one.

DON’T

  • Put all your books into the same box or it will be too heavy to lift.  Try and mix heavy items with lighter ones.
  • Throw out original packaging! Electronic items e.g. TV’s, x-box etc. should be stored in original packaging if possible.
  • Use huge boxes – smaller boxes are better, only use big boxes for linens and cushions.
  • Leave the bed build. Protect furniture by breaking down to smallest components and securing parts together with tape – bedframes included.
  • Forget to mark boxes containing glass as FRAGILE – Wrap glasses individually too rather than altogether.
  • Under-fill – fill up every box entirely to avoid collapse. Use sheets to fill excess space.
  • Store perishable food, you maniac!

So, there you are! Quite the heroes we are! But seriously, don’t pack those boxes too heavily…..we aren’t as strong as we look.
